On Comparisons

A thought to ponder - why is it that many people feel better about themselves when they compare themselves to those that are less fortunate, less skilled, less wise, etc.? Is it possible to be happy regardless of how one compares to others? Is happiness proportional to one's circumstances relative to others? Social stratification theory considers how people rank and group themselves. Grouping, ranking, pecking orders and the like are such a large part of our lives, even though the practice is often divisive. Families, colleagues, friends and lovers all participate in the ranking to some degree. Is it possible for a group of people to interact without establishing a comparative pecking order?

lol, wasn't that one of the downfalls of communism, the fact that those in power segregated and abused their power, making some more equal than others? Sort of supports the original ramble, no? Stratification spares no political ideology. We must be hard wired to segregate somehow....

Oh for goodness sake, I was only joking!
But you could say that communism failed because people are inherently competitive and power hungry which is pretty bleak.Very Hobbesian, and very Hollywood. On the other hand though, hunter gatherer societies (and some nice 'modern' cooperatives) seem pretty happy as well as comparison AND consumption free.
Ranking, comparing, sorting etc are all elements of capitalism. If you like everything the way it is you have no reason to consume to make you feel better. To fill the void. I suppose an ideal world to some would be communal - Hutterites here we come. Interestingly enough, they are open to people leaving the community, but hardly anyone ever does.
Well this got boring. I'll end with something fun: http://www.toothpastefordinner.com/092305/my-wife.gif
